Heather,
I would suggest going to this article is by me and they have thousands more that will help get you started. You can also open an account there and have your acticles published and get paid for it. Most of the writers there are Freelancers and you will find great advice on how to start and where to go to start. But you can start right there and have an article online in 2 or 3 days.
Take the dive, if you’re ready. The best way to start is get a job and after 6 months of thinking about it 4 months ago I did. I found a site that offers you the chance to bid on all kinds of Freelance work from writing to programming, and I think they have about 2000+ active jobs daily. You need to keep in mind it takes time to get that first job and grow from there.

As a freelancer or employee? If second, try online magazines, newspapers, and so forth

My friends writes for one of the major newspapers. She just wrote a few articles and sent them to the editors of newspapers. Do the same
